Everyday Yeah two hundred and ninety-one

There was a can opener on my pillow with a note attached when I woke up this morning. The note read: “I am leaving. I’ve decided to go away for a few years. I don’t know when I’ll return. I only know that it will be sometime in the future. I didn’t want you to be lonely so I decided to leave you this robot as a kind of clone/replacement.

Your Friend,

Everyday Yeah”

I carried the note and can opener into the kitchen and found Everyday Yeah eating a bowl of food. It first looked like cereal, but later I would decide it was egg.

I expected him to say he hadn’t left yet and that he didn’t think I woke up this early. I also thought he might say he had already left and had returned from the future. He didn’t say any of these things. I set the can opener on the table next to his spoon. I kept the note and put it in my pocket. Everyday Yeah thanked me for the gift and put the can opener in his pocket.

Sometime in the future a can will need to be opened. There will be no can opener when we need one and neither of us will know where to find the one lost in our past.
